At the Vietnam Future Energy Summit 2025, Mr. Dao Hoang Duy – Deputy General Director of Sales & Marketing at GG Industries – delivered a notable presentation on the topic: “From Black-box Imports to Made-in-Vietnam BESS Platforms.”

In his presentation, Mr. Duy highlighted that Vietnam still depends heavily on imported “black-box” energy storage systems (BESS), where core technologies such as battery management, energy management, pack design, and safety architecture are controlled entirely by foreign suppliers. As a result, Vietnamese companies mainly act as EPC contractors or basic installers, capturing only a very small portion of the overall value chain.
However, Vietnam is now in a favorable position: supportive policies are emerging, and several local companies — including GGI — are ready to invest seriously in BESS, with strong capabilities in R&D, domestic manufacturing, and teams of highly skilled, dedicated engineers.

GG Industries Proposes a Roadmap for Building a “Make in Vietnam” BESS Industry
Based on GGI’s R&D journey, Mr. Duy presented a three-phase development roadmap to help Vietnam gradually gain full ownership of BESS technologies:
1. Smart Integration Phase
-
Master system design and practical applications for commercial & industrial facilities, infrastructure, and EV charging stations.
-
Localize and expand battery management and energy management software derived from international platforms.
-
Develop standardized capabilities in manufacturing, installation, and long-term operation & maintenance.
2. Deep Localization Phase
-
Target a localization rate of over 50%.
-
Develop in-house hardware for battery management systems, thermal management, fire safety, pack structures, and mechanical components.
-
Standardize BESS product lines tailored for enterprises and large-scale energy projects.
3. Becoming a Regional Platform Provider
-
Deliver complete BESS platforms integrating hardware, software, and services.
-
Export to ASEAN, India, the Middle East, and parts of the U.S.
-
Build fleet-level monitoring and optimization services for multiple BESS systems operating simultaneously.
Technology & Safety — The Core of “Made-in-Vietnam BESS”
Mr. Duy emphasized that mastering BESS technology must begin with the “control and safety brain” — including battery management, energy management, power conversion control, thermal systems, and fire-safety systems. These are the critical foundations that determine safety, performance, and international certification readiness.
GGI aims to:
-
Develop a control platform tailored to Vietnam’s climate, load profiles, and economic use cases.
-
Design battery packs and mechanical structures optimized for hot and humid environments.
-
Integrate proactive safety mechanisms into every control algorithm.
Three Key Enablers for Building a Real BESS Industry in Vietnam
According to Mr. Duy, Vietnam must adopt three ecosystem-level policy pillars:
-
Recognize BESS as strategic infrastructure in power planning, grid operation rules, and the electricity market.
-
Establish clear, stable, and bankable revenue mechanisms to give investors confidence to deploy BESS projects.
-
Implement industrial and talent-development policies to localize core components—such as battery packs, mechanical parts, electrical cabinets, and control electronics—while training a specialized BESS engineering workforce.
