EVNNPC Holds Conference on Implementing Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

The Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) recently organized a hybrid conference (both in-person and online) to launch the implementation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The event was chaired by Mr. Vu Anh Phuong – Deputy General Director of EVNNPC.

At the conference, the Technical Department presented a consolidated report summarizing feedback from equipment manufacturers and proposed strategic directions for the BESS deployment plan.

According to the report, the BESS must comply with international standards such as UL 9540, IEC 62619, and NFPA 855, ensuring compliance with safety, performance, and system integration requirements within EVNNPC’s existing control infrastructure. The system will utilize Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery technology, designed for a minimum lifespan of 20 years or 8,000 charge/discharge cycles, with round-trip efficiency above 85%, and reliable operation under Vietnam’s climatic conditions.

During the discussion, participating departments and units actively exchanged insights and clarified key topics related to technical specifications, system design solutions, testing procedures, and safety assurance measures during implementation.

Representatives from member units and Power Companies proposed additional considerations on operation management, technology transfer training, and operation & maintenance (O&M) service commitments, to ensure the BESS system operates efficiently, stably, and sustainably. All inputs were documented to refine and develop a practical implementation roadmap.

Under the current plan, EVNNPC aims to install BESS units rated at 2.5 MW/5 MWh across 114 110kV substations, for a total capacity of approximately 692.5 MW/1,385 MWh. The deployment is expected to enhance load regulation capability, support renewable energy integration, and improve power supply reliability across the Northern power grid. The systems are scheduled for completion and commissioning from Q2/2026.

In his directive speech, Deputy General Director Vu Anh Phuong commended the initiative and proactive engagement of all departments and units in developing a suitable BESS model for EVNNPC’s distribution grid.

Mr. Phuong emphasized that the deployment of BESS represents a strategic step for EVNNPC in its energy transition roadmap, advancing smart grid development and adoption of modern energy technologies. It also underscores the corporation’s commitment to innovation and leadership in embracing clean and sustainable energy trends.

He urged all specialized departments, member units, and Power Companies to ensure close coordination and synchronization throughout each project phase—from site surveys, technical design, and bid documentation to installation, testing, and commissioning—with a strong focus on progress, quality, and absolute safety. This pilot model, he noted, is of strategic significance and should be closely monitored and evaluated for potential large-scale replication across the corporation.

The commissioning of the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is expected to enhance grid operation efficiency, reduce energy losses, support load dispatching, and strengthen power supply reliability—marking an important milestone in energy resource management and contributing to EVNNPC’s long-term goal of green and sustainable development.
